BABY RATTLE INSTRUCTIONS
Overall finished length of rattle is about 5 3/8” and 1 1/2" around.
There are two chambers holding the rattles. They are
1” and their positions are marked with a circle on each block. The Chamber is only in the middle wood layer. Please measure these and retain them as you round your blank.
The end marked with an "X” is for mounting and gives you about 1/2" to mount.
Everyone has their on style of turning. Here is what we have found to be the easiest to turn the rattle.
Mount your blank, we like using jaws and a live center but most mounting methods will work.
Round your blank to slightly over 1 1/2" in diameter.
Mark your chambers / "bulbs". The length of them from each end (not counting the mounting space) will be about 1 3/4". Think of your rattle being divided into thirds, one third Chamber then one third center handle and then the other one third Chamber.
Turn out your center handle section, depending how you taper it into your chambers it will be about 1 3/4" to 2" long.
Round your chambers to your desired shape remember to keep them about 1 1/2" in diameter. Again the chamber holding the rattles is 1" drilled circle, only in the center wood.
Sand your rattle smooth.
Finish the rattle with high quality salad bowl finish, or other non toxic finish. Remember it is a baby rattle and made to be "sucked on"
Prior to finishing your rattle you can take a sharpie marker and write the baby's name or birth date on the handle section or any place for that matter. It really personalizes the rattle.
